Cadets will be promoted to higher ranks by attending Junior and Senior Leadership courses. After about one year in the Sea cadets you will become eligible to go on a Leadership Course conducted by NZ Cadet forces at Ohakea and sometimes Auckland. As you progress you could be promoted to Leading Cadet and be in charge of younger cadets and their training. All along , you will learn self discipline and responsibility from fully qualified Sea Cadet officers and instructors.
Currently the Cadet forces are pushing to have many of their courses earning Unit Standards as recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
The Chief of Navy Scholarship is offered to any deserving cadet for tertiary education. It is awarded annually and is worth about $6000. But if more than one candidate is worthy it is split between cadets.
